To Retire Cheap and to Stretch your Savings, did you ever Consider Retiring to Nicaragua?
There are thousands of retired Americans who call the Central American country of Nicaragua, home. What are they doing there? Were they in business there their whole lives and did they decide to stay on after they retired? Not really. These are just people who lived their whole lives in America, learned one day about how their hard-earned savings could go so much farther in a Central American country, and picked up stakes and just left for there.
Can you really retire cheap in Nicaragua? While it might be cheaper here, is the quality of life here good enough the way you’ve come to expect it in the US? Let’s start with the kind of home you can afford to buy when you retire here. Real estate prices in Nicaragua are perhaps a tenth of what they are stateside. Just imagine – you could sell your house in the US, and save 90% of the money you make off it, while you get to buy the same level of comfort in Nicaragua. It’s a very safe country to settle in, and friendly. It has been reported that there are single American women who come down to settle here and who live by themselves quite safely.
You wouldn’t have to spend a lot in upkeep on the property you buy either. Nicaragua has some of the lowest property taxes anywhere; and the general cost of getting by is about half of what it is in America. If you draw a pension from your place of work in the US, you can enjoy low-cost imports from the US too. Remember how paying taxes are a huge hassle of life in the US (how could you forget)? If you have grumbled about paying taxes your whole life, Nicaragua should be a pleasant surprise to you. If you are older than 45, and if you make more than $400 a month in pensions, you pay no taxes, and you can import a car from the US every five years duty-free. And for about $100, you could feed a family of five with everything they need for two weeks. Did you always want to be able to afford a full-service maid to do your laundry, to cook and clean around the house? Such a maid could be working for you for about $150 a month. Retire cheap in Nicaragua, and you’re likely to be eating out a lot – dining out at high-end restaurants with wine and everything isn’t likely to cost you any more than $35.
One reason that Nicaragua allows you to retire cheap like this is that word hasn’t really caught on yet about what a great deal the country makes. In general, people still believe that it’s a country of political unrest and disturbances. All that is long gone though -Nicaragua is all about peace and political stability today. And you should probably take a look at it before it takes off in popularity.
